War has started

March 19th, 2003 at 12:00 am

It’s 11:03 and I am in the computer lab straining to get a project completed that is due at midnight.

And for some reason, I can’t concentrate on a damn thing. I mean, the first thing you see on opening up that site is ‘DECAPITATION ATTACK’ and a picture of President Bush with a goofy look on his face. I am highly against this war. I have debated my reasons over and over. And dear god, I wish I had the time to post them tonight. But I swear that they will be up on this site by the weekend for anybody to read them.

Back to Computer Science and COBOL…..

[EDIT] I found an interesting quote tonight. “A country cannot simultaneously prepare and prevent war.” - Albert Einstein. [/EDIT]

48 hours….

March 17th, 2003 at 12:00 am

48 hours away from war. How wonderful…..

I’m off to watch Bush’s speach. I’ll post the rest of my Spring Break story later and my reaction to Bush’s speech.

Spring Break, Part I

First, this is going to be a long post. Hopefully a good, long post, but I’m not promising anything here. Second, I am typing in the dark. So if anythcing is mispeeled, plese ignore it. Tank you.

Third…well, the post itself. So where did we last leave off? Oh yes, my Spring Break has just started. And I was staying up all night to prove to myself that I was an idiot. I did an excellent job. Instead of grabbing a few hours of sleep, I foolishly thought I could stay up 30+ hours and anybody that knows me knows that I need sleep. I ended up paying for it though since I slept on the flight to Oakland and missed the inflight Star Trek movie. Damn.

Anyways, I arrived at the Columbia airport around 7AM and after going through my grueling preflight interview (I still say security is a joke, but that is for another post), I was waiting for the flight when I ran into a guy from my English class last semester. Turned out we were both headed to Chicago, so we hung out and talked for a while. He’s in the Navy and was telling me about his assignment this summer since he won’t be in classes and just some of the training he went through. It sounded like some fun, but tough as hell shit. He was a pretty cool guy too. Jess made fun of me when she realized I “made a new friend” =) If you don’t know already, I can’t stand many of the people here at USC. Too many ignorant, southern drunks for me. And I grew up in this state. Go figure.

Wow, that last paragraph was pretty boring. I’m not funny at 3AM. Anyways, after I got to Chicago, I went to the Oakland gate and got the last seat on the plane. See, my mom works for the airlines and therefore her family flies for free….as long as there are seats open. If the plane is sold out, tough luck. You have to find another way. It’s fun sometimes and stressful as hell other times. But I made it on this flight and slept the whole way. When I got to Oakland, my aunt picked me up and we headed to her house to hang out for the day. My uncle was at work for most of the day, so we hung out and talked for a while before he got home. She just married my uncle this past summer, so we had plenty to talk about and it was cool getting to know her. She’s 8 months pregnant too! It’s weird thinking I’m about to have a cousin who I will be 20 years older.

The next morning my uncle woke me up and we packed up and headed to the mountains to go snowmobiling! But before I get into that, let me describe my uncle. He’s about 45, looks 35, and can act like he is 25. He is a blast to be around and just an all around great guy. So after about a 4 hour drive, we finally get to La Porte, California. Population: 35. I’m not joking. There are more people on the floor of my dorm. Let’s see, the mom and dad owned the hotel, restaurant, and bar (which are all the same building), the daughter owned the general store, and the son-in-law owned the gas station. Quite a “rustic” town if you know what I mean. So anyways, we got up there around 2 and so we figured we could head on out that afternoon for a few hours of sleddin. But there was a problem. I had never worked one of these things before =)

He gave me a quick crash course in what I needed to know. Brakes on left, gas on right, point where you want to go. Oh yeah, and don’t run into anything. And with that vast knowledge of snowmobiling, we were off. The first thing you learn is that these babies can cook. I have never seen a vehicle that goes from 0 to 20 as fast as a snowmobile. You hit the gas and there is a one or two second pause as the engine gets going and then *POP*, you are instantly going 20 MPH. So after learning the first thing about them going fast, you quickly learn a second little tidbit. Hold on for that pop. Otherwise, you go flying off the back end. So we are cruising along at 35 MPH which seems pretty damn fast at first. My uncle was riding a Polaris 700. I had a Polaris 550. The only difference is one goes faster and it’s pretty obvious which one that is. So my uncle flies by me and I figure why not hit the gas and see how fast this thing can go. 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, oh shit a turn. That about sums up the next 10 or 20 minutes. I would go as fast as I could and then slam on the brakes for a curve.

Folks, I cannot stress enough the amazing, raw power you feel when you are riding a snowmobile. Flying through the wilderness at 60+ MPH, going wherever you please, however fast you want. It is just an amazing feeling. You put so much of your body into steering and controling it that it almost because a part of you. An extra limb if you will. You learn your sled. You know how it will react in given situations. And best of all, you command it. It’s a feeling that I cannot describe. This paragraph doesn’t even begin to give justice to the feeling I had when powering this baby through the mountains. It was something that I have never felt before. When you are riding around, no matter for how long, you are going on pure adrenaline and excitement. Your heart never stops pounding. You never want to stop. You want to push it as far as it will go and then some. I just can’t explain it. But god, it was wonderful to feel it pumping through my body.

Ok, has anybody heard of the “buddy-system”? Well my uncle had said to make sure to not lose sight of him so incase anything happened to one of us, the other would be there to help. So what does he do 10 minutes into our journey? Zip around a corner ahead of me and pull into the woods without telling me. What do I do? I fly by and he doesn’t see me go by. For the next 10 minutes I figured he had flown ahead and was just going to be waiting for me, laughing, and giving me a hard time for taking so long. When I arrived at a sign that said “WARNING, AVALANCHE AHEAD”, I realized this buddy system had fallen apart =) We eventually found each other, but it was pretty funny having lost each other after only 10 minutes.

After a few hours, I had gotten a feel for my sled and we were cruising around at 60 MPH. There was hardly anybody else out on the trails, so we stopped every hour or so for a piss / beer for him, coke for me break. Now I had no idea, but snowmobiles are apparently regulated like cars. So beer + a snowmobile = ticket for drunk driving. What a lovely thought to have when the freaking SNOWMOBILE POLICE PULL YOU OVER FOR A STICKER VIOLATION! I’m not joking folks. Out of nowhere, these two cops pull us over to let us know that we need to have our registration stickers on the left side. Blah, blah, blah. Luckily, the wind was blowing into my uncle’s face, so the beer smell never made it to the cop’s nose =)

Around 7 we made it back to the lodge to get some dinner and rest before heading back out for a night run. We were the only guest’s staying there, so we basically had our own kitchen cooking for us. But they were a little low on supplies, so our choices were limited. But after dinner, we wathced TV in the bar for an hour or so and then decided to head back out in the dead of night to ride for a while. We rode up into the woods and damn it was amazing. It was so dark and lonely out there. We shut off our sleds for a while and just looked at the stars and told guy jokes and then cruised back into town (if you can even call it a town) and called it a night.

Well, this post is long enough as it is, so I am going to stop here and type up the rest tomorrow. Peace.

Spring Break

March 7th, 2003 at 12:00 am

Ok, it’s 4:36 AM. Don’t expect this post to be that great =)

My plan going to bed last night was this. Go to sleep at 6AM. Get up at 8AM. Study until 10:30AM then go to class

Reality had other ideas. I did go to bed at 6AM. My alarm went off at 8AM. However I decided to snooze until 10:13AM =)

I finally finished with my exams for the week. My Religion exam was actually a little easy. We had 75 minutes for 4 “short” essays and I pretty much used all 75 minutes up. Then I spent the next few hours in 2 other classes and cramming like hell for my Philosophy exam. See, I took an express Philosophy class. We met twice a week for 3 hours, but it ended at Spring Break. So this was actually my Final Exam in there. We had to write 4 full essays and 20 Identification Terms. I BSed one essay but kicked the shit out of the other 3. For the ID terms….well I think I knew 12…oh well. I could give a rat’s ass now that it is over.

So now I am on my Spring Break. And in 2 hours, I am heading to the airport to catch a flight to Chicago and then it is off to Oakland to visit my uncle and aunt, who have some snowmobiles, which should kick some major ass. My uncle is just like a huge kid. A huge kid that can fund his kid like habits! I was going to go out there last year, but I couldn’t get on any of the flights since I use stand-bye tickets. Hell, I can’t complain, they are free.

So I won’t be on the net or posting here until I get back in town on Wednesday / Thursday. I’m going to Charleston when I get back to spend a few more days with Jess, so I’ll probably be posting then.

So I am off folks. I still have to pack, clean this place, shower, dress, etc…in the next few hours. So I have to cut this short. But when I get back, I expect there to be PLENTY of comments! And without them, there will be dire consequences, DIRE CONSEQUENCES! Take it easy y’all…

I love you Jess. Like nothing else in this world.

Two awesome movies

March 3rd, 2003 at 12:00 am

Welcome to the next installment of Goob’s Blog! In this episode, we hear of Goob’s terrific weekend and even get a sneak preview of some of the movies he has recently seen! In another subplot, it is revealed that Goob is amazingly unprepared for his midterms. And finally, we find out what Goob’s Spring Break plans are!

Welcome back fellow blogger-readers…..that sounds weird, but I can’t think of another funny word. (At 3:30 AM, that word is funny. Trust me) So it’s Sunday night or Monday morning if you are one of those freaks that tells the date by “time.” I’m down here in Charleston with Jess and I thought I would just catch everybody up on what’s been going on the past few days. The items I had on E-Bay all sold except for one. I was damn happy about that since it brought in some much needed money. In fact, if any of my readers were among the 4 people who bought stuff, let me know please! Jessica’s boards are up and running and everybody needs to go sign up and start posting! It’s a great, small group of people so far and everybody on there is really cool =) I’m just happy I got the things up and running! It actually wasn’t as hard as I expected it to be.

I came down here Thursday night and Jessica and I watched Bowling for Columbine. She had shown it here at College of Charleston and she really wanted me to see it. I had remembered hearing about it over the summer and wanting to see it then, but I never got a chance to in the theaters and so we watched the first 3/4 of it and I loved it. I thought it was a well thought out documentary and was amazed by it. The main question it raises is are we a nation of gun nuts? (yes) and if so, why? (get back to me on that one). It was a great movie. One of those that makes you cry and laugh throughout the whole thing. If anybody is interested, I’ll go into a more detailed summary of it. But I really recommend checking it out. I doubt Blockbuster has it yet, but Kazaa Lite does :)
On my drive down here, I had heard a movie review for Donnie Darko. So Jess and I went and rented it and watched it Friday night I believe. The plot revolves around an adolescent boy who is either slightly crazy or seeing into the future. He starts seeing these visions of an evil, 6 foot bunny that tells him to do things. The entire movie is a mind trip and I personally put it in my top 3 favorite ever. The WHOLE movie is symbolism for parts of the plot. There isn’t a single scene that is there just to fill up space. I’ve watched it three times since then and I still am left pondering many aspects about it. I can’t wait to buy the DVD for it and watch another 100 times. And the music…dear god, it’s awesome.

I tried to study for my upcoming midterms. I failed miserably. I got a few hours of work done tonight, but Thursday is fast approaching and I know little to nothing about most of the material in some of my classes. My express Philosophy class is ending this week, so instead of a midterm, we have the final. If I do bad on that, there is no more time to fix it. Talk about a pain in the ass. My Religion class has a lot to study for and I actually have two midterms AFTER my Spring Break, which I thought was going to suck like nothing else, but it turns out now I have an extra week to study for them and instead of having all my test in this one week, it’s more broken up. Hell yeah.

So yeah, my Spring Break starts next week. My uncle lives out in California and he invited me to come snow mobiling with him up in the mountains, so I am flying out on my mom’s standby tickets this Friday morning and coming back Thursday morning. After that, I’ll either go to my hometown or Charleston, depending on where Jess is at the time. I’m pretty excited about going. I’ve never been snow mobiling before and I can’t wait to give it a try. I’ll be sure to let everybody know how it goes! But as you can tell, I won’t be posting during that 6 days. So I better have PLENTY of comments waiting for me when I get back. Don’t worry, I’ll remind you all later this week =) Well, until next time…

So, will Goob make it to San Franciso on stanby tickets and not get stranded in Chicago? Will he fall into a bottomless pit on the snowmobiles? Or even worse, will he fail all his midterms and be forced to spend *gasp* an extra semester at USC?! STAY TUNED TO FIND OUT!!!!

Growing out hair

February 27th, 2003 at 12:00 am

What better use for my website then a shameless plug for my E-bay items? Go bid now and I’ll throw in a personal autograph! Lol….

In other news, my experiment with a shaved head has come to an end. So I go from: [outdated picture] to [outdated picture] and [outdated picture] EDIT: If you really want to see me with a bald head, go into the gallery and look around.

I DID have some pictures from last semester when I had my hair grown long and shaggy. But I think I lost those in the 9 or 10 reformats I did on my computer in the last month. Stick around for another year or so and you will get to see it =)

So why, you might ask, have I decided to shave my goatee and grow out my hair? Well Jess had never really liked the bald head and it was starting to become a pain in the ass shaving it every week. Plus baldness runs wild in my family. I’ll be lucky to be able to grow my hair out past 40….And as far as the goatee, well, I think those only look good with a bald head. And plus I scratched the hell out of Jessica when I kissed her, so that had to go. So I decided to let it grow long and freely until I start to bald and THEN I’ll let myself shave it clean and smooth and grow the hair on my face again.

Damn, I’m gonna miss that look though…..

More random thoughts

February 26th, 2003 at 12:00 am

More Random Thoughts I carry around in my head….

Wait a second…you mean the cast of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” might be available for a TV show? They weren’t busy? I can’t believe it! This is unbelievable! I also noticed that CBS is now calling Monday, “Big Fat Greek Monday.” I wasn’t planning on tuning in, but now, you know, it’s Big Fat Greek Monday and all. I guess we all have to stop by, right?

I’m not sure if anybody else saw “Saved By The Bell: The E! True Hollywood Story,” but I will say this: I was skimming over an article about it looking for something else and came upon this gem. Mr. Belding mentioned that (a) he grew a mustache so he could “distance himself” from the Mr. Belding character to pursue other roles, and (b) he was still upset about the last two seasons of the show because the writers “took too many liberties” with the characters of Screech and Mr. Belding……

I can’t even finish this joke. (a) and (b) sell themselves.

There isn’t a situation on the planet in which I would feel comfortable getting my shoes shined.

So what is my favorite NHL Division, you ask? That would be the Southeastern Division: Florida, Washington, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and Carolina. ‘Lotta history there.

I’m wondering if it’s too early to induct the Post-Will Ferrell SNL season into the “Hall of Fame for Bad SNL Seasons”

Nothing really to say

February 24th, 2003 at 12:00 am

I go too long in between posts. I’ll fix that as soon as people start to complain. =) And yes, I DO change my cam image. I think it is something like every 4 months or something…ok, seriously, I’ll update it when I get back to Columbia. I’m down here in Charleston again this weekend. And I like it quite a lot =) My class for today was cancelled, so I don’t have to drive back until Monday night. My Spring Break is in two weeks and I still don’t know what I am doing…any ideas anyone?

They now have a cereal called Smorz, where it is basically marshmallows and chocolate graham crackers. So we have Smorz, Reese’s Puff, Cookie Crisp for the “more important meal of the day”….and we wonder why the country is so overweight.

I found this article pretty interesting about the US holding back aid if countries don’t support our policy in Iraq. I would take it a little more seriously had I found it on CNN or Reuters, but none the less, I think the basic theme to it is true. Can’t expect much more our government.

Ok, I am off to work on this site a little. I’m gonna move the links on the left around and work on a few things. Peace.

Random post

February 19th, 2003 at 12:00 am

Well this post is going to be extremally random, just to let you all know =)

My current project is to get my Desktop back to working condition. I had Win ME on it. Decided to put Win XP on it. Then tried to go back to ME. Something didn’t quite work right and now my computer doesn’t quite see the “c:” drive, which is just a little problem =) Since I reformatted that thing back in late January, I’ve probably spent a good 45-50 hours working on it. No fun….

What’s more important, trees or parking? Columbia seems to think that by taking away all the parking lots and planting trees, people will be happy. They just forgot one small detail. People won’t be happy. Parking in Columbia is crazy. I didn’t think it was possible to quadruple park 4 cars until I saw it this morning. There were some angry people out there. The way I see it, when you take away parking to plant trees, people become more and more stressed out. As this cycle grows, eventually somebody will snap and run off and start a forest fire somewhere, burning down thousands of trees. And Columbia thought they were doing a good thing…

Somebody keeps taking down my “Tutor Flyers” that I have up offering to tutor people. Either they really want to make sure that they don’t forget my phone number or they don’t want other people in their class getting smarter, ultimately throwing the grading curve off.

Speaking of my phone, I seemed to have blown out one of my electrical outlets. This very outlet was the one that connected electricity to my telephone, so now my phone no longer how power. Without power, I cannot talk to people and schedule tutoring sessions. So why did the outlet blow? I was using my Dirt Devil and sucked up a knockoff Frosted Mini Wheat. Those things really are hard. So by “saving” $1.50 and getting the cheaper, harder Frosted Mini Wheats, it could ultimately cost me a few hundred dollars in lost tutoring sessions.

I don’t like Frosted Mini Wheats anymore.

So damn sick

February 17th, 2003 at 12:00 am

Good God, I have not felt this sick since…..well, since a few months ago, but that’s beside the point. I have caught that god forsaken flu that is going around and I’ll let you all in on a little secret: surprisingly enough, throwing up is not a fun way to spend your nights.

I’m still stuck in my hometown, have yet to study for my exam on Tuesday, and can hardly finish typing this post. I’ll post again tomorrow when I’m feeling better.

And everybody go show Jessica some love. She’s caught this damn flu too…
