Gay Marriages Revisited

February 13th, 2004 at 12:00 am

First off, thanks to everybody who remembered and wished me a happy birthday. Even more thanks to all those who I spent my birthday with. Good times. Sorry for the lack of posts this week, but I was busy cramming as much shit as I could into my head. If anybody ever wakes up in the middle of the night just foaming at the mouth for some knowledge as to how Mao Zedong was able to take over China, well, give me a call because I know much more about it then I’ve ever cared. And if you’re ever asked a question as to how Mussolini fucked over Italy, well, I’m your man again. Seriously, I filled up two bluebooks with essays yesterday AND kicked a History of Policing’s exam to boot, so you’ll have to excuse me if I wasn’t able to find some time to post.

Now, with all the talk recently about Bush mulling over proposing a Constitutional Amendment to basically ban gay and lesbian marriages, I though it would be appropriate to flashback to a post I made 6 months ago. Just for a little reminder.

One of the biggest questions that I still have yet to have answered by anybody who is in support of the possible Amendment is this: What exactly will they be protecting marriage from? What will denying gays and lesbians help them to protect that heterosexuals haven’t already done to marriage? The last I checked, adultery, divorce, and the breakdown of traditional families are already rampant as it is. Somebody show me how the gay couple down to street marrying will lead to Jack and Mary getting divorced.

Until then, anybody who opposes gay marriages is just being ignorant and I don’t have the time of day for you people. One of the reasons I choose History as my major was because as a kid, I would often spend ample time daydreaming about traveling to different eras and experiencing the things those people did. And one such era that was often the target of my fantasies was the ’60s. The Vietnam War protests, the free-spirited atmosphere, and hell, even the height of the Cold War. But the one event from the ’60s that I wished I had been able to experience the most was the Civil Rights Movement. Ever since we were shown the old news footage as children, I’ve often dreamed of being part of a movement where everybody involved was as passionate and determined as those in the Civil Rights Movement were. Hundreds of years of oppression will do that to you I guess. I would give anything to be able to travel back 40 years and go to downtown Birmingham or Montgomery or to be able to march in the Million Man March. And maybe, just maybe, I’d be able to hear Martin Luther King Jr. give his fateful speech in person. But the best part of it all would have been to be able to look at those who opposed you straight square in the eyes and to be able to laugh at their ignorance, just knowing that nothing they could do or say would be able to deny your victory. Their ways were a thing of the past and no matter how hard they tried, their efforts were futile.

The reason I am telling you all this is because I feel that if the said Amendment actually gets passed, those dreams I had might ultimately come true.

See, I understand what Bush is saying about the “sanctity of marriage” blah blah blah, BUT at the same time, you can’t say there is much sanctity in a 50%+ divorce rate. The majority of Americans no longer marry as a sacrement of the church, but rather they civilly marry. What I’m getting at is, although I am an evil Republican, I don’t see why on Earth two men, or two women can’t marry each other. Bush’s argument is outdated and can’t be applied to 21st century America.

Yes Goob, I agree with you. Much like the way Bart and Lisa felt when Homer correctly predicted the meteor heading for Springfield would burn up in the city’s pollution, I am scared.

Hahahahah, see folks, this is what an A+ comment looks like. Angela admited that not only are Republican’s evil, but that gays should be allowed to marry! AND she threw in a relevant Simpsons comment. It can’t get any better then that

=) I’m glad you agree with me on this one. You are open minded. That’s why I luv ya bewbie!

I was talking about his the other day and even blogged that I hope that sometime (soon) down the road they will look back at America’s homophobia with the same disgust as segregation.
Anyway Goob, Dean supporters have to stick together, despite what ball club they support. :)

I always imagined fighting in one of the big wars. Picking off some redcoat officer and camping out in the woods–most of which are just right around us. Maybe shooting a few Yankees 80 some odd years later. Killing some German in the World Wars. Maybe Viet Nam. I never really cared about any of the Interbellum years–who the fuck cares about the Gilded Age or the Roaring Twenties except for the gangsters. Oh, or maybe going West after the Civil War to become a displaced Souther card shark/gunslinger. I would rob the rich and give to the poor, then rob the poor and shoot the money. (That’s A + right there.)

Yeah, I’m conservative too, but I too consider the Republicans to be minions of the dark side, and the Democrats too as far as that goes. But, I dont see what’s wrong with homosexual marriage, and I don’t know what the hell a civil union is, and why it’s any different from a marriage.

The American public drains the sanctity out of everything. It has gotten to the point where if we want something, regardless how ridiculous, we believe we should be entitled to it. This is why the ignorant American can become rich over spilled coffee, a drunk driver can sue the state for making the roads too narrow when he swerved off and killed someone, and WIN! While I am against gay marriages, I am fully confident that eventually they will have their way and further down the road they will want more. We always do and eventually we will be society that collapses in greed. There will be gay people who still will not be happy when they are able to marry their lover just as there are black people who still believe they are not free. You cannot be an equal in society when you yourself believe that you are, in some way not equal, (whether it be sexual preference, race, religion, etc).

People today treat the government as a step-parent. Sure the government provides for them and protects them but when the child doesn’t get it’s way then a fit is thrown and the step-parent can only retaliate for so long before it is forced to give in. This is what we have reduced America too. We all create the problems and then want to blame someone else when we have to fix said problems. Gay marriage may not seem like a problem today, but I assure you, it will have an indirect effect on future events. So while you praise the allowance of gay marriages now, you will curse the new problems that arise when someone else wants to do something that is not currently allowed and it beyond your moral allowance.

I really don’t remember all of what I said as it is late and I am tired. Just be advised, you are digging further into what is already a deep grave. Don’t call me when you need help out.

See Stan, the problem with your logic is that you seem to be saying that if by doing or allowing something will lead to problems down the road that are blatently retarded, we shouldn’t do it.

I’m not saying these people should recieve special treatment above and beyond what the average person gets and is allowed. I agree that once gays are allowed to marry and have all the other basic rights that heterosexuals are allowed, that they will probably continue to bitch and moan about things just like everybody else does. And WHEN we get to that point in the road, after having overcome our shortsightedness and prejudices, we need to be able to say “Now wait, enough is enough. You’ve been given what you are entitled to, don’t keep pushing your luck.”

America has no backbone. Your step-parent analogy is right on the mark for 99% of things that go on in this country. When the day comes that gays start whining that they aren’t being represented enough in NATO or that there aren’t enough gays in the Catholic religion, that’s when we need to collectively smack them and send them to their rooms. Seperated of course. I don’t want to be hearing any gay sex going on upstairs while I’m having dinner.

Now, I think this post might accumulate the most comments ever in Shyzer history. I’m excited.

    Stan http://www.soundclick.com/stangable

Goob that is exactly what I am saying. It’s by allowing these things that are blatantly retarded that has led us up to this point in the first place. For the longest of times it was man and woman. It logically just fits. I mean that literally as well. It’s the Penis + Vagina theory. If long ago, when man first inserted his penis into another man *shudder* we should have “collectively smack them and send them to their rooms.”, thus eliminating the entire content of this Shyzer post. But instead it was allowed and now we have legislation for stupid things. Hollywood already caters to the gay crowd and next there will have to be equal representation for gays on postage stamps and for the love of god we will devote another entire month to learning about another culture. I’m pretty sure March will become Gay History month as March just seems like a month they woudl gayify.

So have your gay weddings. Lick your gay stamps and mark your brothers birthday on your calander on Gay Pride day in Gay History month. One day salute your gay president and bow to the first lady who will actually be a man.

I realize I make it sound like I detest gays, but I don’t. I just know the american public and I know what they will do if they are given any sort of slack at all. While we set back and try to please every damn person in the nation, we will lose our seat as world power and becomes the World’s circus as people come from all over to see what we will fuck up next.

We’ve already screwed ourselves up, we are trying to screw up the government, and the military will eventually be the most technologically advanced bunch of pussies the world will ever know. Sure, you attacked us on our homeland, we COULD retaliate with such force that not even God could compare but that would piss off a small select group of people who have mass media coverage and that would be a shame. So we will continue to take abuse until either everyone is happy and we are overrun by bordering countries or will quietly self destruct ourselves within our own judicial system.

So like I said, have it your way now, but if I hear one complaint out of you when you hang yourselves with the “american rights” rope then I am going to beat you with a hose.

Fair enough Stan =) We seem to agree on the bigger picture that America continues to allow its citizens to repeatedly fuck us over and over and that your average American citizen is what’s wrong with this country. One of these days I’ll finally sit down and try to attack that fucker in a post, but we gotta take baby steps here.

But I don’t think I’ll be hanging myself anytime soon, so don’t worry. That is unless A-Rod is actually traded to the Yankees like they were talking about on ESPN.

Goob, it was a metaphorical hanging. Try to keep up :)
